EU Countries to Share DNA, Fingerprint Database

European_flag_outside_the_CommissionIn a meeting in Luxembourg, EU interior ministers sealed the agreement to share biometric data, such as fingerprint and vehicle registration information between EU countries.
This agreement is effectively an extension of a previously existing treaty of Prum to the rest of the EU countries.  The treaty of Prum is a deal for international cooperation in police investigations, signed by Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Spain.

As a protection measure, a “hit/no hit” system will be used.  This system only tells the police whether a DNA sample matches that found in the database of another EU country.  If the police wanted further information about the matching data, such as fingerprint location, they would have to file this request.
