As Uber and Lyft protest fingerprinting requirements for their drivers in cities like Austin and Houston, there is a host of other interesting careers that require applicants to undergo fingerprint background checks. While the app-based driving companies claim name-based background checks are sufficient, FBI fingerprinting services are far more thorough. Among these careers are boxing promoters, truck drivers, lottery ticket vendors, talent agents, priests, and funeral directors. The talent-related jobs require fingerprints due to a history of fraud, whereas some of the other professions, like truck drivers, are expected to handle significant inventory and drive safely, deeming fingerprints necessary. The use of fingerprinting for the above jobs goes to show that app-based car companies may expect more ubiquitous fingerprint requirements in the future.
